Project Overview

  • Anchored in the State Department of Crops, covering all wards. Implemented through the Department of Agriculture, Livestock & Aquaculture Development, using a - multi-sectoral approach. It emphasizes market-oriented commercialized farming.
  • Aims to facilitate smallholder farmers’ transition from subsistence to market/commercial farming.

Objectives

The project aims to increase market participation and value addition for targeted farmers - across select value chains in project areas.

Key Components

  • Building producer capacity for climate-resilient and stronger value chains.
  • Climate-smart value chain ecosystem investment.
  • Project coordination and management.

Focus Areas and Value Chains

Encompassing all wards in Nyeri, the project will focus on five key value chains: Coffee, Banana, Avocado, Irish Potato, and Dairy.

Farmer Involvement

Currently profiling and mapping value chain actors involves 134,358 farmers.

Planned Activities:

  • Community mobilization rollout.
  • Identification of climate-smart investments.
  • Formation and strengthening of farmers’ producer organizations and SACCOs.

This initiative follows the successful conclusion of another World Bank-funded program, the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP). KCSAP significantly transformed lives, generated employment, and enhanced food security for Nyeri farmers.

The NAVCDP project is poised to bring about positive change, fostering sustainable growth and prosperity for the farming community in Nyeri.
